Information and events

Theater, opera, museums

The main theaters are: the Deutsches Theater with many classical pieces, the Berliner Ensemble, founded by Bertholt Brecht, the experimental Volksbühne, the critical Maxim Gorki Theater and the Renaissance Theater, which is close to the TU.

For people interested in opera there are: the historic Berliner Staatsoper, the modern counterpart, the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Komische Oper with many contemporary productions.

UNESCO-World heritage in the historic center of Berlin is the so called Museum Island, including the Pergamon Museum, the Old National Gallery and the New Museum with the bust of Nofrete. Another highlight, especially for children, is the Museum of Natural History, with the highest dinosaur skeleton in the world.

The Berlin Wall

Interesting are the Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie, one of the most famous former border crossings, the Berlin Wall Memorial, where wall and border zone are shown in the original, the longest remaining piece of the Wall, the East Side Gallery, and the Berlin Wall Trail, a bicycle and footpath along the border strip around the whole of the former West Berlin.

Parks and Zoos

Berlin hat many green oases. The TU for example borders to the largest park of Berlin, the "Tiergarten". In the southeast of the city, in one of the greenest districts, directly at the river Spree is located the "Treptower Park". The third largest Botanical Garden in the world can be found here. Berlin also has two zoos, one in the east and one in the west.

The best-known festival in Berlin is the Berlin International Film Festival ("Berlinale"). It is one of the largest international film festivals and takes place every year in february. Under the umbrella of the Berliner Festspiele at various genres (theater, literature, jazz) many other international festivals take place. The Carnival of Culture is a multicultural festival, which is celebrated annually around Whitsuntide in Kreuzberg.

Sport events

Just outside the TU, every two years (each for european football championship and the FIFA World Cup), the Straße des 17. Juni is the largest public viewing fan fest in Germany. Also each year take place one of the largest marathons, the final of the DFB-Cup, the most important competition in german football, and the ISTAF, an international athletics competition.
