Day care centers

Please note that many websites are only available in German. If you have any questions, we would be happy to help you out!

From the age of one, every child in Berlin has a legal entitlement to a day-care center with up to seven hours of care daily. In addition, childcare is free of charge (except for private day-care centers), only for lunch you must pay a subsidy. Childcare facilities include daycare centers (Kita/Kindergarten) and day nurseries (Tagesmütter/Kindertagespflege).

Daycare-voucher (Kita-Gutschein/financing committment)

Except for privately funded daycare facilities, in order to receive a daycare spot you first need to obtain a so-called 'daycare voucher' (Kita-Gutschein). You can apply for this either in the youth welfare office (Jugendamt) of your residential district or online on the Kita-Portal [1] of the Senate Department for Education, Youth and Family, at the earliest nine months before your desired start of the care. English-language information about the daycare-voucher can be found here [2].

How to find a Kita (daycare center)

In the Berlin Kita-database [3] of the Senate Department you can find an overview of all daycare-centers in Berlin. A modern digital search option with various map functions can be found at www.kita-suche.berlin. [4]

A list of free places (without guarantee) you can find on Kitanetz.de [5] or at your local youth welfare office.

Please consider, that there is no right to a particular place in a particular kindergarten. The allocation of the places is regulated by the daycare-centers on their own responsibility. We recommend you to register in several kindergartens, ask for waiting lists and check this again and again or to ask your youth welfare office.

English-language information you find again here [6].

Day nursery (Tagesmutter/Kindertagespflege)

Family-like structures and very small groups - that describes another form of childcare, the day nursery (in German it is called: 'day mother'/Tagesmutter). Here [7] you find more information about this form of care.

International/multilingual kindergartens

Berlin has a large number of international/multilingual kindergartens. We would be happy to advise you in this regard.

Day-care facilities of the Berlin Student Service (Studierendenwerk Berlin)

The StudierendenWerk Berlin operates two day-care facilities on or near the TU Campus. The Villa March and the Kita Siegmundshof are open to students and employees of the Berlin universities. Currently, the demand for day-care places is extremely high, especially for children aged 0-3 years. Information on the allocation of day-care spots and/or being placed on a waiting list is available here:
