Residence permit

Application for a Visa

Via the websites of the Federal Foreign Office (Auswärtiges Amt), you can find out whether you need a visa to enter Germany or not.

If you do not need a visa, please note that you will be required to obtain a residence permit (see below), when staying longer than 90 days and when taking up paid employment.
If you need a visa you have to apply for a national visa for Germany as soon as possible while you are still in your home country or current country of residence. Once you are in Berlin, you must apply for a residence permit before your visa ends.
The TU Berlin offers a special Visa Service for students and members. If you have any questions concerning the procedure for applying for a visa or residence permit, do not hesitate to contact them.

Residents' Registration Office (Bürgeramt)

In Berlin, just as everywhere in Germany, registration is obligatory. This means that everyone who inhabits an apartment in Berlin must register at the local Residents' Registration Office (Bürgeramt) within the first two weeks.

The easiest way is to arrange an appointment via the Service-Portal Berlin. Unfortunately, the websites are mainly in German language. We therefore recommend to call their telephone support (Bürgertelefon) for a better guidance.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact us at any time!

Residence permit

Before your visa ends, please make sure to arrange an appointment at the Foreigners’ Registration Office (Ausländerbehörde) to obtain a residence permit. Please bring along the following documents:

Registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung) you received from the Residents’ Registration Office

  •     A valid passport
  •     Your employment contract
  •     Proof of valid health insurance
  •     4 biometric passport photos
  •     Rental contract in Berlin
  •     For spouses/children: marriage certificate/birth certificate

If you have any questions concerning your arrival in Berlin, please feel free to contact us or the Visa Service directly. We would be delighted to offer you advice specifically tailored to your needs!
